Paul Theroux should be required reading for any wannabe travel writer. His 1975 book, The Great Railway Bazaar, is justifiably a classic of the genre. It is based on an extended trip where he travelled on many trains throughout Europe and Asia, completely disconnected from his family and friends at home—but totally and immediately connected to his fellow travellers.
